Team Lighthouse Makes History at Al-Noor Dragon Boat Race Canada
The inaugural Al-Noor Annual Dragon Boat Race Canada was a tremendous success. The race, held at the Welland International Flatwater Centre in Welland, Ontario, brought together Muslim communities from across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom for a weekend defined by competition, teamwork, philanthropy, and Muslim unity. For Team Lighthouse Scholarship Foundation (LSF), the event became a historic moment that culminated in a championship victory and the fastest recorded time in the ten-year history of the Al-Noor Dragon Boat Race.
The 2026 Canada race marked the first time that the Al-Noor Dragon Boat Race was held in Canada, as it is usually held in the United Kingdom. Al-Noor Foundation is expanding a successful international tradition that has brought communities together through sport and charitable giving. Thirty fundraising teams participated in the Canadian event, with both men’s and women’s divisions competing through qualifying rounds, semifinals, and championship finals. What made the event especially meaningful was its ability to bring together two powerful forces: the spirit of competition and the spirit of giving. Each team represented not only a group of rowers on the water, but also a cause and a community of supporters behind them.
Together, the participating teams helped generate an extraordinary $365,526 in donations from 7,272 generous donors. Among the leading fundraising teams was Team Lighthouse Scholarship Foundation, which raised an impressive $26,210, finishing third among all fundraising teams. Human Concern International led the fundraising effort with $128,653, followed by MAA Dragons with $38,737. Nisa Foundation raised CA$14,011, while Team Care Dolphins raised CA$5,952. For Team Lighthouse, however, the weekend would become about much more than fundraising.
The race featured a competitive tournament structure, with teams advancing from qualifying rounds to semifinals before earning their place in the championship final. Both men’s and women’s divisions brought energy and excitement to the water as teams competed not only against the clock but against some of the strongest rowers in the Al-Noor racing community. Through every stage of competition, Team Lighthouse demonstrated the qualities that define successful teams: discipline, synchronization, communication, trust, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to one another.
Dragon boat racing is unique because individual strength alone is not enough. Every rower must move together. Every stroke must be synchronized. Every person must trust the person beside them. These facts made the race a fitting representation of the Lighthouse Scholarship Foundation itself. As Team Lighthouse hit the water for the first time in the qualifying round, the stakes were high. Then came the historic performance: Team Lighthouse crossed the finish line in 54.95 seconds, which was the fastest time ever recorded in the ten-year history of the Al-Noor Dragon Boat Race. The performance propelled Team Lighthouse to two more victories and secured the team the Al-Noor Dragon Boat Race Canada 2026 Championship Trophy.
For the rowers, coaches, captains, supporters, volunteers, and everyone connected to Lighthouse Scholarship Foundation, the moment represented the culmination of countless hours of preparation, coordination, and teamwork. The races were not simply about being fast; they were about what can happen when people come together around a common purpose. The significance of Team Lighthouse’s achievement extends beyond the race itself. LSF exists to help students at Noor Academy and IQOU Theological College pursue their education and reach their academic potential without the worry of financial restraints. Team Lighthouse’s participation in the Al-Noor Boat Race provided an opportunity to raise funds and awareness of its mission while bringing supporters together in a completely different setting.
The $26,210 raised by Team Lighthouse will contribute to that broader mission of supporting students and investing in education. The event also demonstrated the incredible generosity of the wider community. With more than 7,000 donors contributing to the event, the Al-Noor Dragon Boat Race showed how sports can become a vehicle for meaningful charitable impact. It brought together athletes, families, volunteers, sponsors, organizations, donors, and community leaders from multiple countries, all united by a shared commitment to giving back.
The Al-Noor Dragon Boat Race Canada was ultimately about much more than who crossed the finish line first. It was about community, charity, sportsmanship, and seeing what becomes possible when people work together. For Team Lighthouse Scholarship Foundation, it was historic. From the first qualifying race to the semifinal and ultimately the championship final, Team Lighthouse demonstrated determination and unity. Their 54.95-second performance etched their name into the history of the Al-Noor Dragon Boat Race, while their $26,210 fundraising total reflected the generosity of the community standing behind them.
The championship trophy is a symbol of the team’s achievement, but the greater victory is the opportunity to use that achievement to support students pursuing Islamic education and strengthen educational opportunities. Lighthouse Scholarship Foundation extends its deepest gratitude to every rower, team captain, volunteer, donor, sponsor, family member, supporter, and member of the community who contributed to this unforgettable weekend. The first Al-Noor Dragon Boat Race Canada has set a remarkable precedent, and Team Lighthouse made sure it would be remembered.
