Significance of El Sayed’s Primary Win

Abdul El Sayed’s win in Michigan’s Democratic Primary exemplifies the increasing dissatisfaction with the current political establishment in America.  According to the New York Times, AIPAC invested approximately $32 million to defeat El Sayed to no avail.  He won with 48.48% of the votes while Haley Stevens secured 47.51% in a historic race.

Abdul El Sayed was born in Rochester, Michigan, to Egyptian immigrant parents.  According to El Sayed’s Senate page, “After a successful career of making government work for Michiganders, he wants to take his vision to Washington and make the United States Senate work for you.”  He is credited with focusing on Michiganders’ health care, including programs that provided glasses to children in need, and rebuilding Detroit’s Health Department post-bankruptcy.    

Although El Sayed is continuously attacked by the Republican nominee Mike Rogers, who has declared him a “terrorist,” he continues to move forward with community outreach.  El Sayed interviewed with MS Now’s Jacob Soboroff and firmly stated regarding Rogers, “His ideas are old, his perspective on politics is old, and he’s going to find that people don’t want that perspective anymore.  So, of course he’s going to do the same thing that MAGA always does, which is try to divide us.”  His comments come after a slew of Islamophobic attacks by Republicans, including Rogers.  

The truth is, whether speaking to Michiganders or Americans in other states, El Sayed’s fight for healthcare affordability, Medicare for All, and retaining tax money to benefit education reform and improvement speaks to the values and desires of everyday citizens.  Speaking with Democracy Now! El Sayed asserted, “In an era where many of us can’t afford basic things like groceries or rent or healthcare, the idea that your government is sending your tax dollars to buy bombs and tanks for foreign governments seems anathema. That money could be spent to fix your potholes, rebuild your kid’s school.”  This is what is increasing El Sayed’s popularity.  His acknowledgement of the current social and economic conditions faced by the average American.  

November 3, 2026 will be an intense United States Senate election battle between Abdul El Sayed and Mike Rogers.  Michigan is a key Senate battleground, and interest and support extend outside of the state.  There are Americans in various states wishing, hoping, and praying that positive change is around the corner.  Supporting candidates like Abdul El Sayed increasingly looks like a step toward that change.
