FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The Muslims of America Announces Inaugural Islamophobia Conference
(Albany, NY) November 3, 2015 – The Muslims of America, Inc., will
convene a conference on “Contemporary Issues of Religion in America:
Discussing, Dissecting and Destroying Islamophobia” on November 14th,
2015, from 9:00am – 4:00pm to be held at:
The Muslim Community Center of the Capital District
21 Lansing Rd N., Schenectady, NY, 12304
After years of exposing the nefarious roots of Islamophobia, the real
identity of ISIS, and engaging in global advocacy to bring Islamophobia
to the forefront, The Muslims of America (TMOA) experienced its own
real-life threat in the spring of 2015. In the upstate New York hamlet
of Holy Islamberg, the congregation of predominantly African-American
Sunni Muslims was the target of a foiled Islamophobic terror plot by a
right-wing domestic extremist, Robert Doggart of Tennessee.
The story received no media coverage until residents of Holy Islamberg
began their own grassroots campaign to bring the matter before the
American public. The hashtag #JusticeforIslamberg became a beacon for
awareness of anti-religious hatred and the need for justice when Doggart
was released on house arrest with no charges of terrorism or a hate
crime.
Conference doors open at 9:00 AM with complimentary continental
breakfast and networking. Panel discussions begin at 10:00 AM.
Conference topics include : “A Year in Review of Islamophobia”, including
the cases of Robert Doggart, Wayne Simmons, Joshua Goldberg and Glendon
Crawford. Experts will discuss “Countering Violent Extremism” and the
pervasive NYPD surveillance of Muslims – a program whose
constitutionality is being challenged in federal court.
Panelists will address the apparent war on American Muslim youth, and
speakers will share ways to collaborate using community interfaith and
intrafaith activists in the fight against Islamophobia.
There will be a special delegation of international attendees who will
share their views on religion in America. To date, twenty countries are
represented in that aspect of the program and more are anticipated.
Registration is required and estimates indicate that the conference
venue will be filled to its 400-seat capacity. The student and senior
admission rate is $10.00. General admission is $25.00. Registration
includes full conference attendance, continental breakfast,
refreshments, and lunch.
