This excerpt is from El Sheikh Mubarik Ali Shah Gilani\u2019s 2007 discourse on Surah Ra\u2019d, in Holy Qur\u2019an, and explains the meaning of the word Ra\u2019d, or thunder in Arabic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Arabic word, Ra\u2019d, is generally believed to be thunder, which comes from the clouds.
Once the Holy Last Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked, \u201cOh Messenger! What is this thunder that we hear?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Holy Last Messenger, peace and blessing be upon him, answered, \u201cThis thunder comes from one of the angels, from one of Allah\u2019s many angels. Ra\u2019d is the name of the angel that Allah has appointed to drive the clouds with a whip of lightning.\u201d
So they again asked, \u201cOh Messenger! What is the thunder we hear?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Holy Last Messenger, peace be upon him, replied, \u201cYou can say it is the voice of the Angel Ra\u2019d.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An example: When the shepherd rounds up the herds of cattle, he produces loud sounds to drive the animals on. So, Ra\u2019d, the angel, also uses a loud sound to drive the clouds on. He also uses a whip made of lightning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
There was an era when people used to worship a god of lightning and thunder, fearing him \u2013in India and other pagan countries. Pagans still do worship this \u201cgod,\u201d because anything that creates fear is worshiped in many religions. Even during the time of the Holy Last Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), people were very much afraid of thunder and lightning. There are many legends about a \u201cgod of lightning and thunder\u201d in Greek mythology. In the Roman tales and in folklore, it is a separate entity. Yet, it is Allah who created everything; and, in fact, Ra\u2019d is serving mankind by driving clouds around so that rain reaches our fields, gardens, crops and orchards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Angel Ra\u2019d\u2019s status is in his being a servant of Allah. The Holy Last Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, said, \u201cWhen you hear this lightening and thunder, do not say \u2018God is Greatest,\u2019 you must say \u2018Glory to Allah,\u2019 that is, \u2018Glory to the Most High and all praises are due to Him.\u2019\u201d Ra\u2019d is a phenomena, an angel that drives the clouds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
