Over the past three years, the 14 Caribbean countries that signed the Petrocaribe agreement have received between 120,000 and 140,000 barrels of oil per day from Venezuela on preferential terms. One BBC report noted that Petrocaribe assistance to Caribbean nations (other than Trinidad and Barbados) is vital as it has saved the region from experiencing an economic crisis.

The newly established Muslim snowboarding team in Alaska held their first official practice last week at Hilltop ski area located in Anchorage, Alaska. With only about half of the team in attendance, the progress made still contributed greatly to the betterment of the entire team.

With only about half of the team in attendance, the progress made still contributed greatly to the betterment of the entire team. So far the projected number of team members stands at about six; of these, four were able to make this practice: David Jones, head coach, Xavier Jones, the assistant coach, and two of their most promising team members, Mubarik and Khadijah Jones.

The recent 28 -year anniversary of the undeclared war between Britain and Argentina over the Falkland Islands, or as they are known in Spanish - Islas Malvinas - arrived and passed with no apparent resolution over the questions of jurisdiction over the islands, and now - the surrounding territorial waters.

The Alaska chapter of the United Muslim Christian Forum (UMCF) membership has extended its community service mission to become volunteers with the American Red Cross in Anchorage, Alaska. Some members are now attending classes, receiving specific training that will allow them to be of valuable assistance in the community in times of crisis. The course, entitled “Client Casework,” which normally takes 9 hours, was condensed into 3 hours, and will equip them to be at the ready, providing emergency services, when needed.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), a British research institute focusing on international security, revealed that Russia in 2009 became the main exporter of weapons to Latin America thanks to the purchases made by Venezuela, but also to Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Colombia. However, two of the countries with the largest defence budgets, Colombia and Mexico, remain faithful to US military arms, while other countries have “diversified suppliers.”

In a small predominately Muslim village located 18 miles (30 km) from the city of Jos, Nigeria, lies the Kuru Karama village, at the point where Nigeria’s Muslim north and predominantly Christian south meet. According to Human Rights Watch, armed men surrounded the small village, then hunted down and attacked Muslim residents, some of whom had sought refuge in homes and at a local mosque.

Four years ago, Cuba and Jamaica embarked on a mission to provide desperately needed routine and critical eye care for people of Jamaica, and the Caricom region in general.  The Jamaica/Cuba Eye Care Project has, since its inception, screened some 20,000 patients, and performed over 4,000 eye surgeries to treat cataracts and other anomalies in patients who otherwise may never have received care.

The government of Venezuela announced the devaluation of its currency, the Venezuelan Bolivar, amid a broad range of decisive steps it has taken to rebound from the impacts of the year-long drought that has forced the enactment of water and energy rationing, and the persistent economic challenges of the global financial crisis. President Hugo Chavez explained the benefit for his country that he expects to derive from the devaluation.

Nobel Peace Prize nominee Aminatou Haidar has ended the month-long hunger strike initiated in protest to her forced exile from her home in Western Sahara.

Nobel Peace Prize nominee Aminatou Haidar has ended the month-long hunger strike initiated in protest to her forced exile from her home in Western Sahara.  Ms. Haidar was flown by chartered jet from Lanzarote Airport in the Spanish Canary Islands where she spent nearly a month, refusing to move until her passport was returned to her and Morrocan authorities permitted her to return to her two children and other family members in El Ayoun, Western Sahara.

The virtual debt management system enables trade between the nine member nations.

The United Muslim Christian Forum (UMCF) Chapter of Alaska recently hosted its first round table discussion. There was great effort made to get the word out and invite coworkers, neighbors, and members of the community. The discussion was held at a well known coffee shop named Kaladi Brothers. Although the turnout was not as well as expected, the UMCF felt the effort was a start. The topic of discussion was a brief overview on the purpose, goals, and mission statement of the organization.

Earlier this month the Anchorage NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) Multi-Cultural Youth Council held a meeting at the Rasmuson hall of the University of Alaska at Anchorage. The meeting ushered in the ACT-SO and Youth Council 2009-2010 year.
