The National Day of Prayer is considered a vital part of the American heritage and has great significance for the nation. However, some now consider the National Day of Prayer, which is the first Thursday in May, to be unconstitutional. According to USA Today, US District Judge Barbara Crabb judged last last month that the government can no more enact laws supporting a day of prayer than it can encourage citizens to fast during Ramadan, attend a synagogue or practice magic.

In late March, the House of Representatives soundly rejected a call to withdraw American troops by the end of the year, in a strong bipartisan endorsement by President Obama’s administration policy in Afghanistan.
According to NY times, after spending over three hours to debate allowing antiwar Democrats to air their dissent, the House voted 356 to 65 to reject the withdrawal proposal.

Over the past year the House and the Senate have been working on an effort to provide health insurance reform that lowers costs, guarantees choices, and enhances quality health care for all Americans. Delegates to the National Congress of American Indians Executive Council Session met in late March to network with each other, and to meet with legislators and policymakers. Leaders and activists from many of America’s 526 federally recognized Native American tribes discussed strategies for lobbying Congress and the Obama administration on a host of political, economic and social issues, including questions of sovereignty for American Indian nations and tribes.

Congressman Murtha “passed away peacefully this afternoon. … At his bedside was his family,” a statement from Murtha spokesman Matt Mazonkey said. Murtha had recently undergone gall bladder surgery and was hospitalized Feb. 2 after complications with his recovery. On Feb. 6 – two days before his death — Murtha passed the mark as Pennsylvania’s longest serving member of Congress, representing the 12th district since 1974.

What was novel and historic about this session was the president's fielding of questions from lawmakers across the political aisle, on their own turf - a Republican political meeting - in an effective and disarming manner. These are GOP politicians who would not ordinarily find themselves in a one-on-one venue with the Democratic president.

The nation and the world observed an amazing event in President Barak Obama's question and answer session at the GOP House Issues Conference, held in Baltimore, Maryland.

Since the fall of last year, the official jobless rate has been over ten percent, while the unofficial rate (taking in the severely underemployed and those who have given up looking) has been over 17 percent.

American employers eliminated 4.2 million jobs in 2009 and sent unemployment soaring into double digits for the first time in more than a quarter century.
