The world tends to turn a blind eye to the continued distress of a people when the spotlight of the media and the bold headlines desist, but the International Qur’anic Open University has steadied the course, not only dispatching the American Muslim Medical Relief Team (AMMRT) within hours of a catastrophic event, but by providing continuous support months or years after the world has forgotten the tragedy even while victims still suffer.

The American Muslims of the International Qur’anic Open University (IQOU) have received support from the citizens of Pakistan who are outraged after release of details in the latest example of maltreatment by the government of Pakistan towards IQOU staff when attempting to obtain their travel visas. In this latest occurrence, members of IQOU’s American Muslim Medical Relief Team (AMMRT) were harassed, treated harshly and denied approval to travel to a country where these same American Muslims have a known history of humanitarian service that spans over thirty years.

President John F. Kennedy said: “Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation.”  

This quote embodies the true spirit of learning, in that we should be acquiring knowledge for the betterment of society and not the propagation of self.  In America, our current approach to education is in total contrast to this idea, as we have become a society that has yielded to promoting individual aspirations in the acquisition of knowledge.  This trend has served to weaken our society and will ultimately lead to our demise if not corrected.  To begin addressing any problem, one must recognize its root.  The core of this crisis lies in the prevalent ideas that govern our society namely Materialism and Capitalism.

Dearborn –Amidst the backdrop of a media frenzy that once again had Terry Jones at its core, Muslims and Christians stood united in support of one another in an incredibly demonstrable stance against the evil plot to cause dissension between Islam and Christianity. Immediately upon hearing that Mr. Jones planned a protest against religious principles, members of the United Muslim-Christian Forum travelled to Michigan from several states to ensure that the bonds between Muslims and Christians remained unbroken. Many UMCF members were on site and met with clergy, residents and local business owners in an effort to quell the potential clash that the homegrown terrorist, Terry Jones, attempted to create.

We Muslims know that we cannot stop the hate campaign against Muslims because the enemy of Islam believes that Muslims have become a danger to their existence. We know these enemies are trying to bring about a clash between Muslims and Christians, but that will not happen. We have read the article written by Donna Gehrke-White and Tim Collie, published in Newsmax Magazine, November, 2010, and found it most misleading and incoherent, written by those who do not know much about Islam. The only thing that is evident from this article is that it is the work of one of the hundreds of hate groups which are trying to bring about a clash between Muslims and Christians. It is the cover up of the hatred felt for American Muslims, be they indigenous or settlers.

Earlier this month, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said new weapons threatened America’s dominance of the high seas and questioned the US Navy’s reliance on costly aircraft carriers and submarines.

Anti-ship missiles and stealthy submarines could undermine the US military’s global reach in the Pacific Ocean and elsewhere, putting carriers and American subs at risk, Gates said in a speech to retired members of the US Navy.

El Salvador, a small Central American country bordered on three sides by Nicaragua, Honduras, and Guatamala, was recently in focus in Washington DC, as its president, Mauricio Funes, visited the US, hosted by President Barack Obama. El Salvador and America are linked in a number of cooperative endeavors - not the least of which are the significant remittances sent by the more than 2 million El Salvadorans who reside in the US to relatives back home.
